Visit Historic Far West
Conveniently
located a quarter mile from the
Far West
temple site, Far West Historical Society
(FWHS) is a non-profit organization created to offer hands-on resources for
those studying LDS history in the Far West era.
Other area sites include:
Liberty Jail, Haun’s Mill, and Adam-Ondi-Ahman.
The
Far West Country Store opened for business in the summer of
2006. We offer light
refreshment for travelers in a historic-styled log house with the
comfort of modern climate control.
We have gifts and souvenirs, including pioneer era
accessories and crafts.
We are an authorized distributor for Deseret Book, and also carry
unique books, woodwork and art work.
We
are pleased to offer these conveniences, but there is much more we
have in store for you. The forty acres owned by FWHS is zoned and
mapped for a
Conference
Center, Resource Library,
Subsistence Garden, several Pioneer Cabins, and a
replica of Brigham Young's New York barn. The Village will be open to the
public for casual visits or extended stays. We will also hold
on-site tours,
lectures, and symposiums on the history of
Far West (circa 1838-1840) and other early Mormon
settlements, activities, and religious development.
Our current project is the
conversion of the on-property Victorian Farm house into a Bed and
Breakfast. Far from the
bustle of the city, the historic country setting will be an
unparalleled experience for its convenient access to such
spiritually significant places as the cornerstone of the
Far West
Temple
and Adam-Ondi-Ahman.
The development of the Far West Historical
Village is a massive
project that will require extensive financial resources.
If you would like to be a contributing member of FWHS and
help make this vision a reality, please contact us.
We look forward to seeing you.
We would be glad to answer any questions you have as you plan
your LDS history vacation.

Update! 7/22/2008
We have been blessed many times this year. We've seen
more tour buses come through than we ever thought would. For
those who haven't been in our store, we have beautiful
paintings and woodworks in stock. Give us a call if you'd like
to know more about the services we offer.
Update! 7/21/2007
We have had a wonderfully successful first year of business.
The Joseph Smith Jr. Family Reunion stopped by for lunch at our
store; Locals and distant travelers have found refreshment, information,
souvenirs, and handicrafts. From people browsing solo to tour
buses, we have enjoyed helping our visitors.
Update! 10/31/2006
For all of us that have been working on this project for the past
decade and more, this is a truly exciting time. We have recently
experienced a wealth of local media coverage.
Update! 9/16/2006
The Far West Country Store has been approved by Deseret Book
Company as an official
Deseret Book Dealer.
We will be carrying Deseret books, DVDs, CDs, and tapes.
We are currently installing the hardwood flooring, electrical
boxes, ceiling fans, finishing trim, and lights.
We should be open for business well before Thanksgiving 2006.
Update! 7/15/2006
The Country Store is standing tall! We are
finishing the inside and getting the shelves stocked. Please
follow the
Country Store link to see the progress.
